What is Self-Directed Thinking?

Non-Conformist

We are told in the Bible to "not be conformed to this world." The goal of the Master Keys is to produce a massive influx of self-directed thinkers. So the opposite of conforming would be self-directed?

The dictionary defines "conform" and "conforming" as:

verb (used without object)
  1. to act in accordance or harmony; comply (usually followed by to): to conform to rules.
  2. to act in accord with the prevailing standards, attitudes, practices, etc., of society or a group: One has to conform in order to succeed in this company.
  3. to be or become similar in form, nature, or character.
  4. to be in harmony or accord.
  5. to comply with the usages of an established church, especially the Church of England.

Opposites of Conform

deny
differ
disagree
disobey
disregard
fight
forget
ignore
oppose
prevent
refuse
reject
neglect

Examples of self-directed?

I saw a car turn left with a sign clearly instructing "No Left Turn". The driver refused to conform to the sign. That is, the driver disobeyed the sign. Was the driver being self-directed or simply rebellious?  Is there a difference?
