Forward Living and Giving

If you have been to almost any church, you are probably familiar with the phrase “Give and it shall be given to you”. Usually the preacher tells you this is about your money, and is expecting you to give to the church because of it. A Friend of mine, a Carpenter from Galilee, is the One who said this. Here is what he said in context:

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Luke 6:37-38  New International Version (NIV)

Notice carefully the context.  Jesus was not in church taking up an offering.  He was explaining something fundamental to life. You may have heard “what goes around, comes around” from someone.  It is basically what Jesus was explaining here.  The “it” is whatever you are giving.  Judgement? Receive judgement. Mercy? you’ll receive mercy.  Condemnation? Well, you see the point here.

Now I realize you Bible scholars will point out that this is Old Testament, even though the book is labeled New Testament.  And you are right: the New Testament came after the cross  (That is a topic for another time, but see this verse:

16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. Hebrew 9:16) .

But don’t lose sight of things that are outside of any dispensation:

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. Genesis 8:22.

There is an order in the Universe.  Give and get whatever you give.  It is a lifestyle, not a church thing.  Go do some small act of kindness to someone without expecting anything from them.  The cycle will complete from another source.  When you plant, you reap what you plant, more than you planted and later than you planted.  That’s just the way it works.  You can only give what you have.  Start with a smile, then add a compliment.  Offer a (silent) prayer for the people you meet.  See how it can all change with a change in your mental diet.
